CPR Saves Lives: What Everyone Should Know

Introduction
When someone suddenly collapses from cardiac arrest, every second counts. A person’s chance of survival drops by 7–10% for every minute CPR is delayed. The good news? You don’t have to be a doctor or nurse to save a life — you just need to know CPR.

In this blog, we’ll break down what CPR is, how it works, when it’s needed, and how you can learn it.

What is CPR and Why is it Important?
CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It’s a life-saving technique used in emergencies when someone’s heartbeat or breathing has stopped. CPR helps keep blood and oxygen flowing to vital organs, especially the brain.

Common situations where CPR is needed:

  • Cardiac arrest
  • Drowning
  • Electric shock
  • Sudden collapse

Without CPR, brain damage can begin in 4–6 minutes. Acting quickly can mean the difference between life and death.

Who Can Perform CPR?
Anyone can learn and perform CPR. You don’t need a medical background. Many lives are saved each year by security guards, teachers, coworkers, parents, and even teenagers who had basic CPR training.

The CAB Method – CPR in 3 Steps

  1. Compressions
Place the heel of your hand on the center of the chest. Push hard and fast, at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute. Let the chest rise completely after each compression.
  2. Airway
Tilt the person’s head back and lift the chin to open the airway.
  3. Breathing
Give two slow breaths, watching the chest rise. If you’re not trained in rescue breaths, continue with compressions only.

Hands-only CPR is better than doing nothing at all.

When to Use CPR
Start CPR when someone:

  • Is unconscious and unresponsive
  • Is not breathing or is only gasping
  • Has no pulse

Call emergency services first, then begin CPR immediately.
